Artist Focus —
Brian McClear challenges the viewer to look beyond the surface, whether considering everyday objects or the people they meet. In his series Ink & Oil, Brian portrays people that have chosen tattoos as their form of self-expression. Whether to commemorate a life event, to satisfy an impulse or as a private talisman, the reasons for getting a tattoo are as varied as the people themselves. Simply put, canvases of people who are themselves canvases.
Brian’s still lifes engage and invite interpretation. Messages, puns and social commentary are tucked between seemingly unrelated objects. A rusted hinge. A wilted rose. A tattered piece of twine. A smooth river stone. The color, texture and intimate beauty of these objects come alive and suddenly unexpected connections are made—rewarding the viewer with fresh discovery.
Currently living and working in Connecticut, Brian McClear earned a BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design. He worked as an illustrator and then focused his creativity to lead the marketing technology arm of one of the leading ad agencies in the Nutmeg state. Recently, he decided to devote himself to painting, preferring bold intuitive brushstrokes to the mouse.
McClear’s work will be featured in a solo exhibition at Alofft Gallery in Litchfield, Connecticut, from June 2 to July 2.
