Brian McClear

Brian McClear is a contemporary representational painter known for still lifes that bring familiar objects together in unexpected ways and portraits concerned with more than simply capturing a likeness.

In both, curiosity and close observation are central to the work. McClear’s still lifes often use wordplay, visual metaphor and humor to find new meaning in familiar objects. Some are playful or nostalgic; others respond to social, political and environmental issues. His portraits turn that same curiosity toward people, exploring identity, personal history and the stories they carry.

Working primarily in oil, McClear’s paintings are representational but decidedly painterly. His direct, intuitive brushwork emphasizes light, form and texture while allowing the hand of the artist and the process of making the painting to remain visible.

Originally from Ohio, McClear earned his BFA from the Columbus College of Art & Design before relocating to New England. He began his career as a freelance illustrator and later spent more than two decades in the advertising industry before returning to painting full-time. He now maintains his studio practice in Connecticut.

His award-winning work has been exhibited nationally and is held in private and museum collections throughout the United States.
