Prospectus Excerpt: In moments of chaos, artwork can function as a temporary pause for both artists and those who view it. The painter Giorgio Morandi states that “[t]o achieve understanding it is necessary not to see many things, but to look hard at what you do see.” This exhibition is an introspection into the world of still life.

Juror: Justin Wiest

Justin Wiest (b.1971) studied at the Schuler School of Fine Arts and the New York Academy of Art. He has taught still life painting at the Silvermine School of Art for over twenty years and has exhibited extensively on the east coast. “Still life painting has always played a vital role in my artistic journey. The craft was learned through the successes and failures of “setting up a still life”. There is a nobleness in the care and composition of objects that are often quietly existing next to us all the time. Sometimes the true nature of these things is unlocked by painting them.”

Incorporated in 1914, the Lyme Art Association continues the tradition of presenting fine art exhibitions and sales by its artist members in the historic gallery. Exhibitions of Lyme Impressionist paintings began in 1902 and were held every summer in the Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library in Old Lyme until August 6, 1921, when the present Lyme Art Association gallery opened.
