Gilding the Lily

Gilding the Lily by Brian McClear

To gild the lily is to embellish what is already complete — an act often seen as unnecessary excess.

In this painting, a partially gilded lily rests against a carved stone base. What begins as a study in surface and contrast carries a quiet reflection on beauty, intervention, and the fine line between enhancement and overreach.

This painting will be included in the upcoming solo exhibition Still Matters, opening April 18 at Alofft Gallery in Litchfield, Connecticut. For exhibition details and inquiries, please contact Alofft Gallery.
